From around 08:30 on 02 October we've had a few short outages on the Bliss network. We expect these to be pretty much over now at 09:00 but wanted to explain the cause.
The connection out of the data centre peers with 2 providers, each with a 1gbps fibre link. One of these providers has experienced trouble this morning and so our connection has simply failed over to the other provider as per the design of the network. The impact on the network would have been much worse if there weren't 2 peer provider connections!
A protocol called BGP handles the advertising of our IP addresses to the rest of the world. During a sudden outage with 1 peer a change in BGP advertising takes a few minutes to propagate to the rest of the Internet - this is exactly what happened several times this morning. Some customers may have been completely unaffected, whilst others may have experienced 5-10 minutes of disruption 2 or 3 times.
We continue to monitor the situation and will provide any updates here.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
